" The Dirty Side of Beauty
by Richelle Killian
When taking an approach to a healthy lifestyle we generally tend to clean up our diets by eliminating refined foods and including some vitamins. We exercise. The one major clean up we tend to overlook is purging our life of chemical exposures.
On a daily basis we are exposed to a number of carcinogenic chemicals that, when accumulated over many years, can cause serious repercussions to our health. The majority of these chemicals are applied directly to our bodies largest organ: our skin.
Think of a typical day: in the shower you slather your warm open pores with a soap laden with propylene glycol (the same chemical present in antifreeze), sodium lauryl sulphate and a number of other highly questionable chemicals. Then when getting out of the shower, you apply a whole body lotion and make-up that also contains these same nasty ingredients and your skin, in its warm post shower state, readily absorbs them. You move onto getting dressed, the clothes have been laundered in a commercial soap which has been steeped in a cocktail of heavy fragrance and detergents. Over the course of the day your skin will absorb this mix of chemicals. That night, you will apply a mixture of anti-aging wonder creams that are compromised of many hormonal disruptors that will leave our bodies out of balance and ultimately aged.
In order to really take control of our health, we have to take into consideration all aspects what healthy living entails. These chemicals that burden our bodies are in products that we use without thinking twice. We are taught to believe that the government assures the safety of these products. Sadly, we are wrong about this. The government does not require health studies or pre-market testing for these products before they are sold. And as people apply an average of 126 unique ingredients on their skin daily, these chemicals, whether they seep through the skin or rinse down the drain, are causing concerns for human health as well as our wildlife, rivers and streams.
The only way to break free of this cycle is to become educated about what you are exposing to yourself as well as your family. Learn about the different chemicals found in skin care products and scrutinize those labels as closely as you would your food. Your choice is a powerful one, if we collectively put our foot down and demand healthier products, changes will have to be made and those changes will benefit our bodies as well as our environment. "
