For many people, the default activity for going out with people you care about is eating. Don't get me wrong, I like to eat. And I like a break from cooking once in a while. But I have been inspired lately to think outside the restaurant box.
So, what else can you do? Activities that involve exercise or learning a new skill can lead to some great times and fun memories, and allow you to re-connect with your date.
Even without leaving the city, there is a great trail network in Anchorage for skiing, walking or biking. If you contain your little one(s) in a stroller or other carrier behind bikes or skis this can even be a date you can accomplish without a baby sitter! For a map of winter trails check out the Nordic Skiing Association site. In the summer this is relatively easier, you can hit the trail at one of the Chugach State Park trails around town and enjoy some of the awesome scenery that inspires so many of us to live here.
Ice skating can be found at Westchester Lagoon and Jewel Lake Park, both of which are regularly hot-mopped to maintain a smooth surface. While this can be a fun activity for the whole family, try leaving the little ones at home and head out for some grownup fun time on the ice! Town Square Park has ice sculptures and lights, and there are some fun art galleries to browse in the neighborhood.
Too cold to ski or ice skate? Check out fun indoor options like a rock-climbing wall, bowling, roller skating or heading to an arcade. There is also the indoor ice rink at the Dimond Center, where lessons are available. Consider going out dancing, or taking lessons to improve your moves together before you hit the dance floor! Browse the stacks at Title Wave or Barnes and Noble together - when was the last time you were able to relax and take your time in a bookstore without worrying about the kids? Time away from the kids is also a great time to peruse the Anchorage Museum - check their website for details on admission and don't miss the Free Admission days on select Saturdays and Sundays this winter!
Hopefully this gives a few ideas to spark some thinking about your next date
